ROCKHAMPTON MALAYALEE ASSOCIATION

An informal Malayalee community had been in existence in Rockhampton, Queensland for many years. When Malayalee families started migrating to Rockhampton from different parts of the world then in the month of March 2022, Malayalee’s in Rockhampton came together to form a non-profit organisation with an aim of helping the Malayalee community to stay connected with their cultural origin and heritage as well as serving the society. This association of Malayalee’s is now called Rockhampton Malayalee Association Incorporated (RMA).

Rockhampton Malayalee Association is the most prominent cultural Organisation of the rapidly growing Malayalee community in Rockhampton and surrounding areas in central Queensland.  The Rockhampton Malayalee community is proud to be an integral part of Australian community while cherishing its origin and heritage of gods own country, Kerala (State) in Southern part of India.

More than half of Kerala’s residents, including most of the Malayalee’s, follow Hinduism. About one-fourth of the population practices Islam. Christians, who account for nearly one-fifth of the population, belong broadly to the Syrian Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches as well as to various Protestant denominations. Kerala also has tiny Jain, Sikh, Buddhist, and Jewish communities.

Kerala has one of the most advanced educational systems and highest levels of literacy in India. Elementary education is compulsory between the ages of 6 and 14. There are primary, middle, and secondary schools, as well as polytechnical and industrial training institutes, arts and science colleges, and professional colleges. Migration became a lifestyle of Keralites for many years now. Keralites have migrated to the Middle East, Americas, Europe and Australia. Today, Malayalee’s in Australia is one of the fastest growing communities who are working in the field of Medicine, Science, Information Technology, Telecom, Engineering, Education and other technical fields and contributing to the economy of this great country called Australia.

The cultural heritage of Kerala reflects extensive interaction with diverse communities from antiquity to the present. The culture of Kerala is one of its kinds in India. Some of the major events showcasing Kerala’s culture are the Onam Festival, the Temple festival at Thrissur, the annual Snake Boat Race at Alleppey, and the festivals of Id and Christmas. We Malayalee’s celebrate all these festivals as our own even though we come from different religious background.
